9th Literature – ESOL Sheltered

Week of 5/4 through 5/15:  9th Literature Online

5/14/20:  Message from Miss V:

Your Final Project is due tomorrow on 5/15/20. Upload to Floopedu or share with me by email:  janet.vrba@cobbk12.org.

If you chose Option #2, your last slide needs to be a Works Cited page with proper citations of the website url pages that you took data, facts, videos, etc. from and included in your teaching. ALL 9th graders should view this tutorial video as you will be creating citations for the next three years in high school.

  • All LATE work received after 5/15/20 will not be accepted.

5/11/20:  Message from Miss V:

This is your final week before final grades post next week. Your job is to keep working on your final project. It is due on Friday, 5/15. You will upload your work onto Floopedu.com. Please contact me by email janet.vrba@cobbk12.org or Remind text if you have questions. We may need to schedule a Zoom conference to talk so I can really help you.

5/5 Message from Miss V:  Your Final Project is listed below. This project is taking place of your EOC (End of Course exam) and will be 20% of your grade. This is a great opportunity for you to raise your grade if you do your best work. If your grade is lower than your 3/13/20 posted grade, then it will not be counted and would not lower your 3/13 grade. Time management is a key to success. You must plan 1.5 hours of class time each day to complete this. Plan the time you will work on this each day and then don’t let anything distract you from doing your work.

Miss V’s Video Instruction:

You will choose ONE option out of three to complete for your final project. Please review all three options. Then choose the one that interests you the most. You will have two weeks to complete.

Click on the link to view your Final Project that will be due on Friday, May 15.

Choose 3 boxes that you will complete for this week’s project that is due on Friday, April 25.

2 – Brainstorm before creating. I also call it Brain Writing. On a piece of paper, write down all of your ideas of how you want to create your project (a writing, video, etc.). Don’t think too hard. It’s like a free write. Just write all and everything that comes into your mind. Welcome unusual ideas. Don’t criticize yourself. Just write every idea down as it flows.

Then, if I were going to create a video on how to create a face mask? I’d write all of my ideas down. What materials does the viewer need? (material, sewing needle, thread, etc.) What steps will I video tape? Write all your ideas down first. Then you’ll see how you want to create the video. You could storyboard your ideas. Or write an outline. Prepare before you create your video.

Day 1, Monday (4/13/20)

View Miss V’s Video Instruction:

Activator:  How has the Covid-19 changed our lives?

We are forced to shelter in and find news ways to relate to one another. Social Media is a key technology that allows us to communicate with our friends and loved ones. It’s even changed the way our celebrities reach out to us. View Pit Bull’s new song released today.

WORK:

Your assignment for this week is to look at diverse media to learn how the Covid-19 Pandemic is affecting your Coming of Age experience. Some seniors will not walk down the aisle in a traditional Graduation Ceremony to receive their diploma. Many of you won’t experience the Prom. Many athletes lost out on your track and field, soccer, or baseball seasons. What does the news, memes, music, etc. have to say about it. You get to make meaning of your own experience in how you document in journals, poems, or videos.

Let’s review your “Coming of Age in Changing Times” Choice Board Project (April 13 – 17):

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wORiG99smAVtsSBdjfevGCTZDbG4wOKk_Pcxs12U5G0/edit?usp=sharing

You will choose three squares to complete. You’ll pick one box from each category of:  Creative, Writing, and Reading. Your Choice Board Project is due on Friday, 4/17. You will upload all 3 assignments to https://www.floopedu.com/

=========================================================

Week of 3/16 – 3/20:  9th Literature Online Classroom Lessons

Day 1:  3/16 (Monday):

  1. Since we have finished “Romeo and Juliet,” we will proceed to complete our Embedded Assessment online. We are writing an argument essay on Who is to Blame for the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. I will guide you one day at a time. By Friday, you’ll write your essay.

TODAY, you will blame one of the following but we’ll collect evidence for all:

  • The Parents
  • Friar Lawrence
  • Romeo and Juliet
  •

I am attaching the “Quote Collector” document that we’ve been working on in class as this is your evidence for the essay.    RJ Quote Collector

If you have another character that you want to blame, email me with your argument. I will approve any strong argument with good evidence.

R & J Summarized Video of the play:

Today (3/16), read the attached articles. ADD to your Quote Collector.

  • 1 direct quote from the article that blames the parents (Parent Responsibility Law)
  • 1 direct quote from the article that blames Friar Lawrence
  • 1 direct quote from the article blaming teenage brains

Read the attached articles.  You must click on each link to open the document. Some articles open a new window. Some need to download as MS Word or PDF.

Parents are to Blame:  AJC-Parent Law 1 2018

Friar Lawrence is to Blame:  Friar Lawrence to Blame

Romeo and Juliet are to Blame:  The Teen Brain

Day 2:  3/17 (Tuesday):

For those who were in class on Friday, I gave you the Argument Essay Graphic Organizer (G.O.) that will help you in gathering evidence as well as create your Thesis and Counterclaim. For those who were not in class, please use this Essay G.O. (click on link):  Argument Essay Graphic Organizer

Today, we will complete the Argument Essay G.O. You need to finish reading the articles if you have not.

Your Topic line is:  Who is to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet?

Now, decide the Claim you will argue. Who will you blame? If you’re blaming Friar Lawrence, then you write the claim on Step 2:  Establish a position/claim:  Friar Lawrence is to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.  (See my example that I posted below.)

Then go back to Step 1 and complete the Evidence.  You will gather your evidence as Pros and Cons. You need 3 Pros and 1 Con for your Claim.

A Pro is for your argument:  You need 3 Pros (2 from the play and 1 from an article)

A Con is against your argument. You need 1 Con (from the play or an article)

Remember to cite your evidence. Please see my example:

RJ Essay GO Example

Day 3: Wednesday (3/18):

What is a Thesis?

thesis statement is a statement that occurs at the end of the introduction, after the background information on the topic. (Literarydevices.net)  The Thesis statement will be the last sentence in your introduction paragraph. It tells the reader exactly what your claim is and what you’ll be discussing in your essay.

#1:  Today we will finish writing our Thesis and Counterclaim. Send me a picture of your Essay Graphic Organizer by email (janet.vrba@cobbk12.org) or text on my Remind so I can check your work and confirm that your Thesis is correct.

#2:  Create your counterclaim for your essay. This is knowing and writing about the opposing viewpoints. For example, if you are blaming Friar Lawrence for the untimely deaths of Romeo and Juliet, the opposing viewpoint would blame the Parents or Romeo. Please use the attached graphic organizer to create your Counterclaim and then share this with me so I can check it:  RJ Counterclaim Graphic Org

#3:  Complete this Essay Guide. This will be for your final Essay grade including the above work I have asked for you to submit by email with a picture or PDF scan. There are free PDF apps you can download and use for FREE. The one I use is Genius Scan.

Complete and turn this in to me todayR&J Essay G.O.

Then you will write the first draft of your essay using this guided outline:

How to write an essay – brainstorm:

Day 4: Thursday (3/19):

I have been receiving your work and I will review all of it and comment. I’ll write you back to let you know if you’ve got it right or guide you. Good job to those who are submitting work. Keep it up!

Today’s lesson:  I want you to hand-write out your essay OR type it on Office 365 that you can login to. Once you write your essay, please send me the pic or scanned copy to me on Remind or email as you have been doing. I will be getting feedback to you by 10 a.m. so you can use a correct Thesis.

Activator:  What is a hook?

It is the hook that fisherman put their bait on to attract and catch fish. See the point? When the fish grabs the bait on the point, then the point “hooks” into the fish’s mouth and he’s caught until the fisherman reels him in.

It’s the same with writing. You want to hook your reader by finding an interesting fact, famous quote, or statistic about your subject matter. Before you write your essay, I want you to go online and find a good hook. For example, if you’re blaming Romeo and Juliet, maybe find a statistic about teenage suicide to hook your reader. How many teens commit suicide because of they can’t have what they want?

If you’re blaming the Friar, find a statistic about other bad priests who betray the trust of people who go to them.

OR, since this is a play written by the most famous writer in the world (William Shakespeare), find a quote by Shakespeare that hooks the reader.

Please read my sample essay written by Jennifer Lopez when she was in my class:

J Lopez – R and J essay mine w edits

You’ll read how she used a famous quote to hook your attention, then writes about the background about the play and her topic to transition you into her Thesis. The Thesis should be the last sentence of your first paragraph.
