Writers read. Readers write.

The good news about starting school on August 1 is Fall break. Even though it’s time to relax and recharge, I hope that all of my students will find time to read each day as I will do from my favorite beach in Half Moon Bay. Read a book and change your life! I’ll see everyone on October 3!

SSR – Silent-Sustained Reading (9th & 10th grades)

“A mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge. That is why I read so much.”

~ George R. R. Martin

We advocate reading 10-15 minutes on a daily basis. Students have been asked to chose a novel that has been approved by their teacher. In addition to our classwork, students will read a few novels throughout the semester. The first novel needs to be read and an Alternative Book Report (ABR) written to demonstrate knowledge of the text. Students have seven options to choose from for an ABR (attached document) and can choose their first due date of Friday, Sept. 23, before the Fall Break OR Monday, Oct. 3, upon our return to school. Read the attached document for more details.

Welcome to our Classroom Blog!

Students and Parents,

Welcome to my blog! I will use this blog to support my 9th Grade Literature and 10th Grade World Literature classes. I’ll write weekly posts with important information on assignments, study resources, and test dates. Information for both classes are posted on the home page. Specific information for each class can be found by clicking on the 9th grade or 10th grade tabs above. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at:  janet.vrba@cobbk12.org.

This year I’m the advisor of Kell’s Underground Poets’ Society that meets weekly in Room 2209 on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. All poets and writers are invited to attend! We will write and share our original poems and creative writing.

I am thrilled to be a part of the Kell High School community and look forward to having a great year with my students, parents, and colleagues.
